Excellence in IT Services

I have been in the IT services for 30 years and I have witnessed the changes and growth of these services. In the 80’s technology solutions were much simpler, and information wasn’t the sole product of technology processing. This meant that the business reliance on technology services was not a major factor. In the past two decades we have seen technology services becoming much more complex, available, the dependence of information on technology processing, and the dominance of technology in the core of a business.

Excellence in the IT services is what every business strives for, with the dominance of the IT services in the business, this excellence will excel the business. Of course there is no magic formula for making this happen, but I can tell you that just adding more technology services and solutions in most cases will not achieve this excellence. Unfortunately I have witnessed many businesses thinking exactly that; if they buy a new solution, or upgrade some services, it will fix their problems, make them that much better, but it doesn’t. A foundation to excellence in IT services lies actually in the non-hardware, or software services, but rather in the operational side, it’s the formation of the IT Best Practices Methodology. It is vital that every business form its IT Best Practices (I would suggest general business Best Practices as well). This means taking the time to analyze the requirements, the operations, the services, and build the Best Practices methodology that fits the business needs, AND enforce this!

From studies we know that many failures in IT services, if it’s in system upgrades, security breaches, etc., did not occur due to poor technology services, but rather from the lack of proper IT operations, and that is because there were no Best Practices to follow, or if there were then the IT team did not operate accordingly.
